The Brother HL-3260N Network Color Laser Printer is a vexing machine. On one hand, it comes equipped with an excellent set of client and administrator options and produces high-quality prints. On the other hand, there are glaring omissions in the print utilities, such as the inability to kill a job. Worse, the Brother’s speed was abysmal. Software and driver installation was not fully automated—an annoyance all too common. Using the administrative software, you can create the NetWare queue and connect the printer, print server, and nds context. On Microsoft Windows 2000 server, however, the setup requires manual intervention. Printing across the Internet from a remote location or across a vpn is a hot topic, and Brother has an intriguing take on it. Instead of using a customized port, ipp (Internet Printing Protocol), or the Windows 2000 ip connection, as most other color laser printers do, Brother uses smtp e-mail. It’s a simple and brilliant idea: Configure the unit to connect to an e-mail server and install a driver. When it’s printed, the document is rasterized (translated into code the printer can understand) and e-mailed to the printer. Considering all of these excellent features, it’s too bad that the Brother took 3 minutes 39 seconds to print a single -page graphic from Photoshop and nearly half an hour to print the Adobe Acrobat file. When asked about our findings, Brother recommended adding a 6gb hard drive for offices that routinely print such large graphic files.
